Ophthalmologist / Eye Surgeon, MBChB; FRANZCO

Dr Van Heerden is a cataract and refractive surgeon, retina sub-specialist and comprehensive general Ophthalmologist.

Dr Van Heerden is the Head of Unit, Surgical Ophthalmology Services at the Royal Victorian Eye and Ear Hospital.  He is a Director of Armadale Eye Clinic, Mornington Peninsula Eye Clinic and is the Principal Surgeon at Eye Laser Specialists.

He is an expert cataract and refractive surgeon. He is the first Ophthalmologist in Victoria to offer SMILE surgery. He does his cataract surgery at Windsor Private Hospital.

He has a sub-specialist interest in medical retina conditions which include Age-Related Macular Degeneration and Diabetic Retinopathy.

Dr Van Heerden grew-up in South Africa. He studied his medical degree at Stellenbosch University. He started eye surgery in a rural hospital in South Africa. He then went to The United Kingdom where he furthered his surgical skills and became a Member of the Royal College of Ophthalmologists-London. He did his post-graduate training at Groote Schuur Hospital, Cape Town and became a Fellow of the College of Ophthalmologists, South Africa.

He moved to Melbourne and completed a year’s fellowship in Medical Retina and Inflammatory Diseases of the Eye at the Royal Victoria Eye and Ear Hospital. He became a Fellow of the Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Ophthalmologists in 2009.
